I went to Howletts Safari Park in Kent reccently for some recreation. I was suprised to find a Saxon settlement as I safaried among the animals. (Re-creation found during Recreation was an alternative title to this piece, but I knew you would not forgive that indulgence.)
How did our ancestors build their homes 1,500 years ago? Well, they dug a hole and built up a hut with some cunning to avoid the wind from blowing it over. But I was intriqued to discover the origin of our word and the name of Gates' ubiquitous operating system came from the creation of little holes in the walls to let light and wind through - Wind Eyes.
